Parents, if your dependant college bound student is applying for any
type of financial aid or has received any scholarships, you will need to
file a FAFSA application. Apply online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov.
You and your student also need to check with the college(s) to which
applying to determine if they require a CSS PROFILE application to be
filed. College codes are available from each particular college website
or from the www.CollegeBoard.com website. Watch for deadlines.
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) currently cannot be
submitted prior to January 1st of senior year of high school. Apply
online by using an assigned PIN #, which is obtained by applying online
at www.pin.ed.gov. After applying online, your PIN # is emailed to you
in 1-3 days, so look for it. The PIN # allows you to electronically sign
your FAFSA application and can be used to reapply for student aid every
year. Thereafter, apply for the PIN # before completing the FAFSA
application. Any questions call 800-4-FED-AID.
You will need the six-digit college code which can be obtained at
www.fafsa.ed.gov or by calling the financial aid office of the college
you are listing. Check with individual colleges for their FAFSA
application deadlines. You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR), a few
weeks after applying for FAFSA.
Freshman college students or their parents: If the student is claimed as a dependant on tax returns, you will need to complete FAFSA yearly. You will
need the information from your prior year’s tax return. Once you have filed
FAFSA, the remaining years are easier because your information is saved.
